Kirin isn’t a new artist. What we’re seeing is a new Kirin. Upon going solo, his videos have been twisting necks, piercing eyeballs and riling internet users into a frenzy since late last year, when his picturesque epileptic nightmare for ‘WIIW’ won J Awards ‘Clip Of The Year’ for 2012. The track that accompanied was four minutes of apocalyptic and mesmerising post-rock drone, that begs to be investigated.
UTRB was once a Welsh singer called Pete Lawrie, yet this new solo project is an mind-blowing metamorphosis. He’s unleashing a beast, from folky Jekyll to bass-laden Hyde. ‘Pressure’ froths with ideas. The vocals switching from punchy to soulful, and the production is a chaotic reverie from My Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Only Real is an absolute favourite of mine, so to hear new material makes my jowls sweat like unfit otters. This one, ‘Backseat Kisses’, is his most complex song yet. The trademark grinding guitar plucks sit with some almost Four Tet piano stabs, and his usual white boy rhymes. Grunge grime = REPPIN’ REAL!
I met Australian beatsmith; Chet Faker, at The Great Escape festival in Brighton back in May. He revealed that in Australia there is a burgeoning scene of young producers who get most of their recognition and attention from outside of the country, rather than within.
